CHAPTER 16 - MAX

Fiona is all business when she barges into my office. I put the “do not disturb” sign up because I simply couldn’t’ deal with talking to anyone today. I almost just left early and went home, but I needed to look over and sign the dean’s proposal to me for next semester. I still hand’t signed it when she barreled into my office like a bull in a China shop.

The sign doesn’t apply to Fiona. I had wanted to talk to her earlier anyway, but she’s been avoiding me all day, until now. I can only imagine that she wants to let me have it because of how I acted at her apartment. This morning, I felt like I was prepared to talk to her, but now I just feel completely caught off guard again.

“I know that we need to talk,” I say once she sits down at the other side of my desk. She looks focused today. A far cry from her morning sickness pajama look the other day, and I can tell that she’s on a mission for something.

I hadn't really prepared what to say to her, only that I knew we couldn't leave things as they were. As much as I would like to brush all of this under the rug, that ship has obviously sailed. It would seem that she did come prepared with something to say, though, and she doesn’t hesitate to lean right into it.

“I have a proposal for you,” Fiona says, sounding more matter of fact than I've ever heard her before. “I'm going to keep this baby, and I know it's not what you want. It's not what I had planned on either. But now that it's here, I'm going to go through with it.”

I shift uncomfortably in my seat as I listen to her list out a few unpleasant facts surrounding the situation that we find ourselves in.

“You’re older than me and already have a whole plan for your life, I’m sure,” she continues, completely unaware that my life is hurdling toward destruction at this point. “You’re on the faculty here and I’m a student, which I’m sure would be frowned upon if anyone knew. I’m not real happy with how all of this has played out, but I’m also not hell-bent on destroying your life or your career. I just want to pick up the pieces and move on, so that is why I’m here. I want to offer you a deal.”

My forehead wrinkles in both curiosity and concern about what kind of “deal” she might have in mind. Hopefully this isn’t some sort of bribery on her part because I don’t have the energy to deal with any more complications to what was supposed to be a simple “fade to black” plan for my future.

But instead of bribery or an equivalently titillating proposal, Fiona’s approach to this is highly unusual.

“My mother is getting married in Mexico to her idiot fiancé, and I have to attend the wedding,” she says.
